PVSMILE is a Horizon Europe project focused on improving the performance, reliability, and sustainability of photovoltaic (PV) systems through advanced monitoring, predictive maintenance, and circularity strategies.
The project combines digital tools, data-driven diagnostics, and innovative approaches to extend the lifetime of solar assets and reduce operational risks.
Total project cost: € 6 000 962,50
Why it matters
As solar capacity grows rapidly, ensuring that PV systems perform efficiently over time becomes a critical challenge.
Many installations underperform due to limited monitoring, delayed maintenance, and lack of end-of-life strategies.
PVSMILE addresses this gap by moving from reactive to predictive management of solar assets—making renewable energy more reliable, bankable, and scalable.
What the project does
PVSMILE develops and tests integrated solutions to optimize the full lifecycle of photovoltaic systems.
This includes:
- Advanced monitoring systems for real-time performance tracking
- Predictive maintenance tools based on data analytics and AI
- Fault detection and diagnostics to reduce downtime
- Strategies for reuse, recycling, and circular management of PV components
The project validates these solutions across different real-world environments, ensuring they are replicable at scale.
Expected impact
PVSMILE contributes to a more resilient and efficient solar energy sector by:
- Increasing energy yield and system reliability
- Reducing operation and maintenance costs
- Extending the lifespan of PV installations
- Supporting circular economy approaches in the solar value chain
- Strengthening the economic viability of renewable energy investments
Engreen’s role
Engreen works on stakeholder engagement, dissemination, and replication strategies.
The focus is on connecting technical solutions with real market applications—ensuring that results are not confined to pilot sites but can be adopted by companies, operators, and territories.
Engreen also supports the positioning of PVSMILE within broader energy transition frameworks, linking it to business models, regulatory contexts, and scalability pathways.
