The Challenge
Burkina Faso faces persistent challenges in ensuring reliable and affordable access to electricity, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas.
Millions of people remain disconnected from the national grid, limiting opportunities for economic development, healthcare access, and education.
To tackle this, the International Solar Alliance (ISA) launched a project to assess priority areas for solar mini-grid development and to prepare bankable Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) — a crucial step in attracting investment and scaling clean energy solutions.
The project needed partners with a deep technical background, local engagement capability, and proven expertise in building sustainable energy ecosystems in emerging markets.
EnGreen’s Solution
Partnering with GME and the local expert organization 2iE, EnGreen played a central role in delivering a comprehensive and field-driven response:

Localized Energy Assessments
Leveraging its experience across Africa, EnGreen coordinated field studies and energy needs assessments in key regions of Burkina Faso, working closely with 2iE to capture both technical and social data. -
Tailored Technical and Financial Solutions
EnGreen designed bespoke solar mini-grid models for each identified site, combining renewable energy resource assessments, system sizing, load profiling, and financial modeling to ensure long-term viability. -
Focus on Sustainability and Capacity Building
Recognizing that technology alone is not enough, EnGreen integrated community engagement, environmental and social safeguards, and local capacity-building elements to ensure the projects’ resilience and ownership. -
Preparation of Bankable DPRs
For each potential site, EnGreen developed a bankable Detailed Project Report, including technical specifications, economic models, environmental impact assessments, and implementation strategies — ensuring the projects are fully investment-ready and aligned with Burkina Faso’s electrification goals.
